When we usually report on powerhouse cinematic crossovers, it’s often about the latest Godzilla x Kong adventure shaking up the MonsterVerse. But even those titanic icons can’t compete with the sheer star power of Meryl Streep and Sigourney Weaver — two acting legends whose combined force could level a city block without a single atomic breath. And now, courtesy of Deadline, comes the exciting reveal that the Oscar-stacked Streep and the original Ellen Ripley herself — longtime friends from their Yale Drama School days — will finally share the screen for the very first time in the upcoming New York–set thriller Useful Idiots.
The film will be directed by Joseph Cedar (Constellation), based on a script he co-wrote with Shachar Bar-On. Useful Idiots already sounds like exactly the kind of tense, layered thriller built for two icons to devour. According to Deadline’s summary, Streep will play an experienced journalist covering New York’s high-end real estate market. Burned out from years of glorifying the ultra-rich, she seizes on the impending record sale of a luxury apartment to investigate its mysterious buyer. That trail leads her directly into the orbit of a powerful oligarch whose influence extends far beyond Manhattan — supported by an intricate web of fixers, loyal enablers, and a brilliant young strategist. Before long, Streep’s character finds herself dangerously entangled, placing both her career and personal life squarely in harm’s way.
The synopsis, however, doesn’t reveal how Sigourney Weaver fits into the story. Could she be the elusive oligarch? A key strategist? A shadowy handler? Or something entirely unexpected? While the mystery remains intact, Weaver did drop an intriguing hint during her recent interview for Empire’s Stranger Things issue:
“I am playing Meryl Streep’s best friend, and that’ll be fun! How often do we get to see two older women with a long shared history in a movie? I’m thrilled they’re even doing that — it’s a surprise. And now, yes, I’m finally ready to play the best-friend role.”
And just like that, we have it — a Streep–Weaver onscreen friendship decades in the making. Filming is expected to begin in early 2026, but until then, fans can catch each actress leading major franchise sequels: Streep in The Devil Wears Prada 2 and Weaver in Avatar: Fire and Ash.
Honestly, imagining Miranda Priestly and Kiri navigating corporate life on Pandora feels like the kind of cinematic fever dream we’d absolutely buy a ticket for.
