Brie Larson Joins Super Mario Galaxy Movie as Rosalina

Let’s-a go! Nintendo finally confirmed the long-rumored sequel to The Super Mario Bros. Movie, officially titled The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, and during today’s Nintendo Direct they unveiled a brand-new, full-length trailer. Chris Pratt’s Mario and Charlie Day’s Luigi are back for another cosmic adventure under the direction of Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic — and this time, the Mario universe is expanding in more ways than one. Brie Larson joins the cast as the beloved Super Mario Galaxy icon Princess Rosalina, and Benny Safdie makes the jump from helming The Smashing Machine to lending his voice to none other than Bowser Jr., the chaotic heir to Jack Black’s legendary villain. Their big reveal is teased in the clip below.

What a delightfully chaotic first look it is. While this teaser doesn’t dive deeply into the story or clarify how closely the film will mirror the plot of Nintendo’s acclaimed Galaxy titles, it bursts with fan-service and hidden nods. We see a tiny, imprisoned Bowser belting out dramatic songs and pining obsessively over Princess Peach; vibrant shots of lush, star-scattered planets beyond the Mushroom Kingdom; and the dramatic introductions of Safdie’s flail-swinging Bowser Jr. and Larson’s serene, celestial Rosalina. And if you caught Bowser singing a little callback to his Super Mario 64 theme — yes, that definitely happened.

With the first film surpassing the billion-dollar mark worldwide, expectations for this outer-space sequel are sky-high. But with two iconic games as its foundation, a powerhouse ensemble ready to blast off, and countless new galaxies to explore, The Super Mario Galaxy Movie already looks like it’s racing full-speed down the Rainbow Road toward another major box-office win. Fans will have plenty to shout “Wahoo!” about when the film hits theaters on April 3, 2026.
